Caerphilly-based housing association United Welsh has raised £5,425 for its charity of the year.

Staff took part in a range of activities to raise money after they voted to make Alzheimer’s Society Cymru the association’s corporate charity for 2016.

Some of the fundraising efforts have included a ‘Great United Welsh Bake Off’, a Wimbledon strawberry and cream fancy dress day and a 50-mile bike ride.

In October last year, a team of 15 United Welsh staff also ran the Cardiff Half Marathon, resulting in over £2,000 being raised for that event alone.

Lynda Sagona, Chief Executive of United Welsh said: “Many of our staff and tenants have been touched by dementia so this is a cause that is close to many of our hearts.”

Alzheimer’s Society Cymru provides information and practical and emotional support to help people live well with dementia, including investment in research and support for families.

Rhia Jones, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society Cymru in Gwent thanked United Welsh and said: “The support of organisations like United Welsh enables us to continue researching the cause, cure and prevention of dementia, while providing vital support to help people living with dementia to live well.”

United Welsh has nominated Cancer Research Wales as their 2017 Charity of the Year.
