A new £25 million school for Oakdale is nearing completion, according to Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Islwyn High School will sit on the site of the former Oakdale Colliery, and will house pupils from the former Pontllanfraith and Oakdale comprehensive schools.

The two schools merged in September to form Islwyn High, although pupils are still being taught on the sites of their respective former schools.

Pupil ambassadors recently paid a visit to the build of the brand new school building.

Headteacher Tim Williams said: “It has been fantastic to be involved in every step of the building process for our new school.

“Islwyn High School is more than just a building, it is a place where we can shape the future of our pupils and offer them the best possible learning environment to achieve their ambitions.”

The modern school, which has been part-funded by Welsh Government cash, has three floors and will host 1,170 pupils including those with more complex needs.

The design includes a garden, amphitheatre and a pond for pupils to enjoy the outdoor space.

It also boasts a 3G sports pitch, underground rainwater storage tanks and solar panels on its roof.

The official handover of the keys will take place at the end of April with pupils moving in July.

I cannot wait to see how traffic is going to be managed. It’s sure to be interesting at the Waterloo and Coal Yard Rise Junction.
