RSPCA issue warning after series of cat poisonings around county borough

News | | Published: 09:31, Friday March 3rd, 2017.

RSPCA Cymru has issued a warning to pet owners following a string of reported cat poisonings across Caerphilly County Borough.

The animal charity has been responding to calls in Crumlin, Newbridge and Pontllanfraith, labelling the incidents “deeply worrying”.

In December last year, three cats died in the space of a week on Rhymney Street, Pontllanfraith, with two confirmed as a result of anti-freeze poisoning.

Those incidents followed several similar cases in Crumlin, where several cats have been put down due to poisoning, and in Newbridge, where a tabby cat was found dead in the woodlands near Ael-y-Bryn Terrace with symptoms consistent with poisoning.

Annie Simmonds, RSPCA inspector, said: “In recent months, I have been looking into a series of deeply worrying cat poisoning incidences.

“Sadly, in Crumlin, Newbridge, and in Blackwood, I’ve been made aware of fatal cat poisonings, with reports of others within these communities seeing their pets experience a similar, tragic fate.

“Though it isn’t clear whether these cases are connected, or whether they were deliberate in nature, we are urging anyone with any information to come forward and contact us.

“Our inspectorate appeal line can be reached on 0300 123 8018 and calls are treated in confidence.”

This is sickening. We’ve seen animal traps on paths on Caerphilly mountain and now what is suggested might possibly be deliberate poisoning of cats.

I simply cannot see how it is not deliberate, our cat takes one sniff of her worming medicine and turns it down (it takes a lot of treats for her to take it), how a cat would drink anti-freeze by accident I cannot imagine. It is very sad that someone would want to hurt these wonderful animals. In the 2015 General Election someone threatened to deliberately run over our cat Georgie because I was standing for UKIP, as if our cat has political opinion, regardless it was illegal hate and wrong.

Yes Sam I quite agree this is sickening. I believe that antifreeze is tasteless, I could be wrong of course and will corrected if anyone knows different, but cats drink it thinking its water. The problem is that some people just do not care about animals and think its ok to harm them. I believe anyone harming ANY animal for the sake of it should, if caught, and thats also a problem, face a heavy fine and imprisonment. You are also correct when you say your cat Georgie has not political opinion. Animals just do not care what politics humans have, they have more sense, or perhaps know something that we don’t.
