Caerphilly Observer has been named Independent Community News Service of the Year for a third consecutive time at the 2017 Wales Media Awards.

Judges praised Caerphilly Observer, which launched its print edition in 2013, as “a shining example of a great local newspaper” with “strong stories” and “balanced coverage”.

Organised by the Journalists’ Charity, the awards are now in their third year and were announced at a black-tie event on Friday, March 31, at the Mercure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff. The awards celebrate and promote great journalism in Wales and were hosted by Sky News presenter Dermot Murnaghan.

Richard Gurner, Publisher and Editor of Caerphilly Observer, said: “Winning the category for a third year running is a tremendous honour. A huge thank you to all of our readers, advertisers and supporters.

“The judges’ words in particular meant a lot to us and it is fantastic to get our work recognised by fellow professionals.

“We’re a relatively small team, but together we punch way above our weight in terms of our editorial coverage.”

In total, 21 awards were handed out with veteran broadcaster Vincent Kane being honoured with the Outstanding Achievement award.

The awards are organised by Spencer David on behalf of the Journalists’ Charity in Wales.

The awards’ sponsors and partners are: Comtek, Welsh Government, Celf Design, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Western Power Distribution, Freshwater, Camelot, Cleartech Live , NUJ, Aston Martin, Spencer David, Natasha Hirst Photography, Signs Express, Specialist Models, and the University of South Wales.
