Officers and members of the public have been recognised for their work in an awards ceremony held by Gwent Police.

Diane Egan and Danielle Thomas were given the Gwent Good Citizen Award after they helped to protect a 61-year-old man who had been stabbed in Caerphilly town centre.

The pair were among a group of police officers also recognised for their efforts in dealing with the attack. DI Amanda Thomas, PC Jonathan Miton and PC Dean Manning were all commended for their work.

Evan John Smith, 43, was later jailed for life for the Cardiff Road attack, which happened in September last year.

PC David Nancarrow and PC Nicholas Hadjipetrou were also commended for their courage and perseverance in dealing with an incident of disorder at the Celtic Manor last November.

Both officers were injured during the alcohol-fuelled attack by Jade Williams, of Bryn Aber, Abertridwr, and Dafydd Williams, of Cefn Ilan Road, Abertridwr.

Dafydd admitted two charges of affray and one of criminal damage, while Jade pleaded guilty to affray, a public order offence, assaulting a police officer and possession of cannabis.

They were both sentenced to four months and the judge described the couple’s behaviour as “truly appalling”.

The Working in Partnership Award went to a number of people from the Taraggan project – a community allotment in Bargoed.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “Since its development social isolation has decreased, friendships have been made and neighbourhoods have become friendlier.

“New partnerships are continuously being formed and together people have produced a haven in the middle of their council estate that is regularly visited not only by local residents and children but by people who want to emulate their success.”
