A Caerphilly community is hosting a charity concert at the end of the month to raise money in memory of its late chairman and much-loved friend.
The Vanguard Centre and Church, based on Van Road in Caerphilly, will welcome a range of musical talents through its doors on Saturday July 22 for a celebration of the life of David Hawthorne.
Mr Hawthorne died last year having been diagnosed with motor neurone disease, and the community hopes to raise £10,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of South Wales.
So far, around £6,000 has been donated to the cause, with all proceeds from the gala concert contributing to the amount.
Organiser David Fortey said the evening would be a fitting occasion for the man it was being held for.
He said: “David Hawthorn was a real lover of music and the arts and, in his capacity as Chairman of the Vanguard centre, was the first person to congratulate and show his appreciation to any visiting artist on behalf of all at Vanguard, and the local community.
“His dedication and commitment not only to the Vanguard centre but also to the local community as a whole was second to none. Even though I only had the privilege of knowing David for a few years, he certainly left his mark on all who met him and it has been such an honour to arrange this concert in his memory. It’s the kind of concert that he would have loved to have attended, and hopefully it’ll be something special.”
Performing on the night will be members of Only Men Aloud, including Huw Euron, whose own father died of motor neurone disease.
Tickets cost £15. For more information, contact davidfortey@yahoo.co.uk.
