Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has “warmly welcomed” the announcement by the UK Government of an inquiry into the scandal of contaminated blood given to NHS patients during the 1970s and 1980s.

The announcement was made in the House of Commons and follows determined campaigning by victims and their families.

In June this year, Bronwen Morgan, 15, from Nelson, presented a petition to Number 10 calling for such an inquiry.

Bronwen’s grandfather, who raised her, was given contaminated blood by the NHS.

Mr David said: “The announcement comes after a huge amount of campaigning. Only the other day Bronwen Morgan presented a petition to No 10 and she and the other campaigners must be congratulated on their determination and persistence.

The Government has finally conceded an inquiry. Now we must ensure that it is as thorough and as comprehensive as possible.”

After the announcement Bronwen said “I am so pleased that the Government has now said there will be an inquiry.

“So many people died needlessly because of contaminated blood and we want to know how this was allowed to happen.”
