Primary school pupils have been honing their DIY skills while helping to preserve bee populations by constructing a habitable bee hive.

Twenty Year 6 pupils from St James Primary School in Caerphilly have worked with charity Groundwork Wales to build a bee hive for a colony of honeybees.

The project allowed pupils to develop basic DIY skills using hammers and pliers to produce complicated woodwork.
The hive has since been donated to a local beekeeper, who will teach the pupils about the work of bees as pollinators.

Cllr Philippa Marsden, Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement, said: “Well done to everybody involved in this brilliant project at St James Primary School.

“It is always wonderful to see successful partnership working benefiting pupils as well as the local environment.”
