A 21-year-old man from Aberdare has been charged with being drunk and disorderly after armed police officers were called to Caerphilly bus station on Tuesday evening.

Gwent Police confirmed no weapon was found and that the man was not in possession of a firearm, or any other weapon.

Police received a call from a member of the public at around 6.20pm on Tuesday, July 25, with reports of a man on a bus with a suspected weapon.

Six armed officers attended and police later said the man, who was initially reported as being 21-years-old, voluntarily got off the bus he was on.

Asked by Caerphilly Observer if the police response was an overreaction, a force spokeswoman said: “Every emergency call coming into our force control room is risk assessed and resources are tasked accordingly.

“For this incident in particular due to the report of a firearm we responded proportionately to ensure the safety of the public and our deployed officers.”

The incident caused disruption to rail and bus services.
