Pub chain JD Wetherspoon has submitted plans to extend The Sirhowy in Blackwood town centre.

The company is looking to take over the building next door to its site on High Street and join the two together.

Initial plans were first submitted in February this year and were approved in April.

The company has since altered its plans and has recently submitted a new planning application.

If approved, the redevelopment, which will cost £850,000, will see a new glass lobby at the entrance of the pub created.

The ground floor of the former takeaway next door will become a new customer area, while its upstairs will become a new staff area.

Extensions at the back of the building will be demolished to extend the pub’s beer garden and new toilets will be installed.

A spokesman for the company said the pub will have to close at some point during the redevelopment, if approved, but that no timescales have been set as the purchase is still to be completed on the former food outlet.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “The Sirhowy in Blackwood is a popular and well established pub in the town.

“The investment highlights our commitment to the pub and the town and will hopefully act as a catalyst for other companies to invest in the town.”
