A firefighter from Caerphilly is attempting to scale the height of Everest – on a ladder.
Tommy McCarthy will join 19 others from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service in attempting to break the world record for the furthest distance climbed on a fire ladder on Saturday August 19.
The 20-strong team will ascend the ladder to the height of Everest – 29,028ft – in full kit and breathing apparatus weighing over 22kg.
The group will be scaling a scaffold tower set up in The Hayes square in Cardiff city centre to raise funds for Velindre Cancer Centre, Golau, Cancer Foundation, and The Fire Fighters Charity.
Tommy, from the Caerphilly station, said: “The team and I have been training extensively and are so excited to attempt this Guinness World Record. All funds raised will be going to some amazing charities in Wales so we hope lots of people come out to show their support.
“South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is committed to serving and helping our local communities and we are extremely pleased to have the support of everyone’s favourite firefighter Sam, who is a real firefighting hero, born and bred in Wales”.
Climbing starts at 11am, and people are encouraged to show their support. Children will also have the opportunity to meet Fireman Sam throughout the day.
Steven Madeley, general manager for the St David’s shopping centre, said: “We are so excited to host the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and everyone’s favourite firefighter, Sam, as they attempt this incredible world record attempt.
“We hope that as many people as possible to come along to support this amazing effort.”
