A much-loved councillor who served the community for nearly 50 years was celebrated at a retirement bash in Markham.
Leon Gardiner stepped down from Caerphilly County Borough Council ahead of May’s council elections after 45 years of service to the Argoed, Cefn Fforest, and Blackwood wards.
On Monday, August 7, friends, family and fellow councillors marked his retirement with a surprise get together at Markham Miners Welfare Club.
Mr Gardiner, who was elected as Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough in 2015, called the party “absolutely brilliant”.
He said: “It was completely unexpected and unbelievable. We had a wonderful time, everyone was first class and welcoming and it was fabulous for myself, my wife Alma, and our two daughters.
“To think I went there [the Welfare Club] as a boy to the pictures, and these years later my friends and family are there for me, it was a complete surprise.
“For the sort of person I am, royalty couldn’t have had better.”
Mr Gardiner, 83, was invited to and attended three Queen’s Garden Parties during his time as a councillor, and met Nelson Mandela in London – an experience he highlights as a standout moment of his career.
“I had a marvellous life with the council, and it’s not an easy task these days, but it was time to finish at my age.
“I’m very proud of the Valleys. We couldn’t ask for a better place to live than the area Caerphilly covers.
“People have been great to me, and all I can say is thank you.”
On the night, Mr Gardiner was presented with a £50 cheque by his Argoed successor, Cllr Walter Williams.
He will split the amount between the Ty Hafan and Macmillan Cancer Support – the same charities he fundraised for as Mayor.
Blackwood councillor, Nigel Dix, also attended the party, and said: “I’ve known Leon since 2004 when we were elected together in Blackwood and consider him a close friend.
“He’s a genuine, caring and generous person who was tireless in his effort to raise money for various causes in the local community. He gives a lot of time and effort towards raising money, and is unparalleled in that aspect.
“His legacy will live on in all the good he’s done in the community, and it’s hard to sum 45 years worth of service into a few words.
“His passion has shone throughout his career, and I’m sure he’s looking forward to spending a bit more time with his family now he’s retired.”
