Organisers of a Caerphilly town charity music festival are optimistic they can reach their next milestone of £325,000 being raised for Velindre Cancer Centre after another hugely successful event.

The annual festival is held in memory of local musicians Andrew Nichols, who was known as Mega, and Paul Grahame, who sadly both lost their lives to cancer.

The event was originally established by friend Steve Sullivan.

This year was the 23rd such event at Caerphilly RFC’s Virginia Park after the first was held in 1995.

Almost 2,000 people attended the bank holiday weekend event supporting the Saturday evening ‘100 voices sing the Musicals’ and Megaday Sunday.

Organisers said the ‘100 voices sing the Musicals’ was a big success and continues to grow each year.

The theatre groups, choir and soloists kept the audience of all ages captivated throughout the evening.

The sun was shining on Megaday Sunday. Crowds gathered in the huge marquee while others enjoyed the sunshine with friends and family listening and dancing to the music.

The night ended, as always, with a spectacular firework display.

With proceeds from the main weekend and other events, such as the Megaday Junior Showcase and forthcoming MegaRun, the £325,000 raised for Velindre since 1995 is likely to be broken.

On behalf of the Megaday Team, organiser Peter Hopkins said: “We are so grateful to everyone who has supported Megaday this year.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to the crowds of people who have attended our events, to the performers, the volunteers, businesses, cyclists and runners.

“Your support enables us to meet our core aims of remembering lost loved ones and have a great time while fundraising for Velindre Cancer Centre.

“Megaday continues to be a success and we cannot wait until 2018 and reaching our next target.”
