Homes on the most polluted road in Wales could be demolished in an attempt to improve air quality.

In May 2016, the A472 Hafodyrynys Road in Crumlin was last year named the most polluted stretch of road in the UK outside of London.

Caerphilly County Borough Council opened discussions with residents to discuss future steps, before beginning a consultation into options outlined in a Draft Air Quality Action Plan.

Those include compulsory purchasing of homes on Woodside Terrace for demolition; building a bypass; introducing traffic management measures; and reducing the number of lorries on the road.

Earlier this year, residents living on the road called on the council to buy their houses to end their health nightmare.

One resident, Barbara Smith bought a house on Woodside Terrace four months ago, but is already looking to move.

She told The Guardian: “I can’t sleep, I can’t breathe. I want to leave.”

Ms Smith has spent £3,500 on secondary double glazing since buying the property, but it has made no difference.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Protection, Cllr Eluned Stenner, said: “With the support of the local community and our partners, we remain fully committed to doing all we can to help improve the air quality situation.”
