The Wales Valleys Walking Festival has returned this September for its 13th year, with 12 walks across the South Wales Valleys.

This year’s festival will take on the theme ‘legendary’, with a variety of walks from challenging all day treks to easier strolls and special interest walks.

A walk through Parc Cwm Darran will take place on Saturday, September 16, for a day of walking up onto the beautiful open space of Gelligaer Common to take a look at the very important sites of historical interest. The walk will start at 9.30am for approximately ten miles.

On Saturday, September 23, a seven strenuous seven-mile walk will take place from the former Markham Colliery entrance on the A4048 at 11am and will lead walkers through the monastic landscape of Manmoel and Markham, whilst keeping an eye out for any interesting wildlife in the supper Sirhowy Valley’s wild woodlands and valleys.

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services said: “It is great to see this festival going from strength to strength, with a fantastic variety of walks celebrating historical legends and covering all corners of Caerphilly. The walks don’t just get you out in our wonderful countryside but also explore our culture and history too. This a fine way to stay fit and active, as well as finding out about our heritage along the way.”
