The Winding House Museum in New Tredegar has scooped a prestigious award for the second time.

The Sandford Award is an independently judged assessment of heritage education and is granted in recognition of excellence.

One of the judges who visited the museum commented: “The Winding House Museum is a gem and deserves to be known by a wider audience. The schools’ programme is as exciting as it is interesting, offering sessions that are educationally sound, thoughtfully planned and professionally delivered.

“The hands-on experiences provided for children, using original and good quality replica artefacts, are excellent, and enable children to engage the past with understanding, appreciation and empathy.”

The Winding House – the museum for Caerphilly County Borough – runs a range of learning programmes for schools based around themes.

The news follows a successful summer events programme which has attracted children of all ages to join in and take part in a range of interactive activities.

Cllr Sean Morgan, Cabinet Member responsible for Economy and Sustainability, said: “The museum provides a fun and interactive learning experience for all who enter its doors. The museum is described as a gem of the county, the spectacular views, interesting displays and the free entry make it the ideal location for an educational visit.”
