A Penyrheol man has appeared before magistrates accused of being a loan shark.

Robert Gareth Sparey, 54, of Y Cilgant, Penyrheol, is facing six charges including illegal money lending, money laundering, breaches of the Trade Marks Act 1994 and perverting and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Sparey appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, September 19, and did not enter a formal plea.

The alleged illegal lending offences happened over a 20-year period and took place on the Lansbury Park estate.

District Judge Martin Brown explained to Sparey that due to the nature of the charges “these matters could only be heard by the Crown Court”.

Sparey was released on bail and is due to appear at Newport Crown Court on October 17 for a plea hearing.
