A primary school was on lockdown this morning after a man with a samurai sword sword was spotted outside.

Worried parents posted their concerns after the man was seen outside Hengoed Primary School, in Hengoed Road, Hengoed.

One said: “Want to go and grab the kids and run. Can’t because all gates are locked until further notice. My heart’s in my mouth.”

Gwent Police said a man was arrested at around 9.30am after a reports of an assault at nearby Hawthorn Avenue and have confirmed the sword has been recovered.

A spokeswoman said: “At approximately 9.30am this morning we had a report of an assault on Hawthorn Avenue in Hengoed.

“One man has been taken to the Royal Gwent hospital with minor injuries.

“One 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in police custody.

“We did have calls reporting that a man was seen with a sword and this was obviously a concern for the public.
Police have now recovered a sword and it is now in our possession.

“We would like to thank the public for their calls and would encourage anyone with any information to call 101 quoting log number 120 25/9/17.”

A spokesman on behalf of Caerphilly County Borough Council and Hengoed Primary School said: “The safety of pupils is paramount and the school followed all appropriate procedures after concerns were raised about a suspicious individual in the area.

“All the children are fine and nursery pupils went home as usual at 12 noon. Parents of all other classes are advised to collect their children at the end of the school day as normal.”

This is the reason why we need more police on the street, and not those community officer and council warden types.

I totally agree why in this day and age police are sat in stations and in motor cars never in the beat or stations are closed
