Staff from a Co-op food store in Nelson have helped raised a four-figure sum for charity by battling the torrid elements on top of South Wales’ highest peak.

The five-strong team braved driving wind and rain in the Brecon Beacons National Park to hike to the top of Pen y Fan – almost 900m high – in order to raise money for the Welsh Blood Service.

The team raised more than £3,500 to support the work of the charity, which relies on donations.

Chris Whitton, manager of the store on Mafon Road in Nelson, said: “As a community retailer it is important to us that we not only provide the community with their everyday essentials, but we contribute to improving local life too.

“This challenge was an awesome experience, especially in the rough conditions.

“We are thrilled that together we have been able to raise such a substantial sum for such a worthy cause, and would like to thank colleagues, members and customers for their donations and support.”
