The Blackwood Stroke Group, which provides support to stroke survivors and their carers, is searching for volunteers.

The group’s secretary, Mike Rees, began volunteering when he saw the positive impact the group was having on his wife, who is in a wheelchair following her stroke.

He said: “I enjoy spending time with the group. And if there wasn’t one, then my wife wouldn’t get out of the house, and it would be the same for so many others. It’s so uplifting to see people’s lives improving.

“So we’d love people of all ages to volunteer, as it also gives the carers of the survivors a chance to rest. The more volunteers we have, the more people we can welcome to the group.”

The Stroke Association in Wales works to support groups like Blackwood, as an estimated 7,000 people every year have a stroke in Wales, while nearly 65,000 people are living with the long term effects.

Blackwood Stroke Group would particularly like to hear from those with skills in accounts and first aid, though would welcome everyone.
