Aberbargoed father’s 10k-a-day challenge for charity

10K A DAY: Ben James is running 300 kilometres in November

A father from Aberbargoed is attempting to run the equivalent distance of seven marathons to raise money for two charities close to his heart.

Ben James, 33, is running ten kilometres a day throughout November to fundraise for Velindre Cancer Centre and pregnancy education charity Kicks Count.

The broadband engineer from Aberbargoed will be completing his challenge on Thursday, November 30, and hopes to have raised £2,000 for the causes.

Speaking after completing his 20th run of the 30, he said: “I wanted to do something challenging for charity, but I wish I’d just done one 10k now, my knees are killing.

“I’m doing it all for Velindre and Kicks Count.

“I’ve had family members pass away from cancer, and a few years ago my wife and I sadly lost a child during pregnancy, so I know the good work they both do.”

Ben has been completing each distance at Planet Fitness gym in Aberbargoed before work, and says he’s counting down the kilometres left, despite enjoying his improved fitness.

He said: “I wanted a challenge, and I definitely got one. I’ve come this far, and even if I have to crawl the last few I’ll get there.

“I’m having a lot of hot baths to recover in the evenings, but seeing the donations come in from people really spurs you through the bad days.

“It’s been a kick up the backside to get out and get to the gym too. I’m not naturally the fittest guy around.

“I play tighthead prop for Markham RFC so I’m not used to running so much.

“I’m glad that it’s the autumn internationals at the moment because on some weekends I’ve had to run 10k and then play a match.”
