Families in Caerphilly were treated to a surprise visit by Pudsey the Bear and football legend Nathan Blake when the pair joined in a Family Fun Day in the town.

Organised in partnership with StreetGames Wales, housing associated United Welsh, Communities First, Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO) and Children in Need, the event was held at Van Community Centre in Caerphilly town on Thursday, November 2.

The event was held as part of the Fit and Fed project, where children and parents learn about healthy eating and share nutritious lunches before participating in a range of fitness activities, such as ball games and discovering how to make the most of the natural environment for exercise.

It also helps to fill the gap in the school holidays for families who receive dinners during term time by providing the lunches for the children free of charge.

The project offers children and young people free physical activities accompanied by a nutritious lunch, and helps them become more physically active, learn more about healthy eating and grow in confidence.

Over 50 families enjoyed a wide range of fun activities, from cooking healthy burgers to self-defence classes.

Former Wales footballer, Nathan Blake, who is an ambassador of StreetGames, said: “When I was a child I saw a lot of friends go through many of the issues that StreetGames is tackling, such as food being available during the school holidays.

“This is why I’m proud to be the ambassador of such a rewarding organisation, which actually helps and acts on these issues.”

Paul Roberts, Head of Programmes for StreetGames Wales, added: “These initiatives and events over the half-term are essential and a great way of taking pressure off families.

“It not only provides a safe place but also sustainability for children when going back to school after the half-term holidays.”

Clare Bradwick, Community Investment Coordinator for United Welsh, said: “In addition to our housing services, we deliver a number of programmes to support the wellbeing of our tenants.

“The Fit and Fed scheme made a real difference to families during the holidays this year and we are exploring ways to roll the programme out further next year.”
