Police have arrested 41 people so far in the Gwent force area as part of their Christmas drink drive campaign.

The arrests happened between December 1, when the campaign began, and December 18. Eight further people were also arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.

Operational Support Chief Inspector Martyn Smith, of Gwent Police, said: “We are committed to making the roads in Wales safer and year on year we raise awareness of the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs through campaigns such as this one.

“We recently launched a texting facility to allow people to let contact us anonymously if they know someone who drink or drug drives – all we need is the car registration, make, model, location, time and driver details if known – just text us.

“The Christmas festivities and New Year are a time for enjoyment, and whilst I would encourage everyone to have a good time, it is important to reiterate, if you drink, don’t drive and if you drive, don’t drink – it’s that simple.

“If you have any information relating to someone who may be driving after drinking or taking drugs please let us know by texting us on 07464 645 100, or report it to 101. In an emergency always call 999.”

Well done on the arrests but it seems that Gwent police and their colleagues in north and Dyfed Powys are asking the public to do more and more of their job for them, if its not asking for information every 2 minutes to asking us to ring them if we know any drink drivers. Their latest today I heard is they want people with Cameras on their cars to send videos in of dangerous driving so they can prosecute them. What had happened to old style policing where the police actually went out on the beat instead of sitting in an office waiting for people to send them details in. If they patrolled more it would get rid of the growing obseity problem in the police.

We’d be better off with “Charley Farley & Piggy Malone”.

More creative accounting ? 41 arrests instantly becomes 49 !
No wonder the public no longer have any confidence in them !
