Caerphilly County Borough Council has said it is working with Mudiad Meithrin to create more spaces for children whose families want them schooled in Welsh.

The Welsh-medium early years education provider was recently given £1 million a year extra for the next two years by the Welsh Government, which has set a target of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.

Cllr Philippa Marsden, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement, said: “We very much welcome Welsh Government’s commitment to increase the number of Welsh speakers across Wales and we are keen to play our part in helping to achieve this objective.

“Our recent Childcare Sufficiency Assessment is helping to identify the level of demand for Welsh language provision across the county borough and we will work with Mudiad Meithrin to target areas where additional provision could be beneficial in future.”

The council’s own five-year Welsh Language Strategy is aiming to increase the number of Welsh speakers in the area by 3% between 2017 and 2022.

The target is to have a minimum of 14.2% of the county borough’s population speaking Welsh.
