Caerphilly’s Pontygwindy Road will be partially closed at the Pwyllypant roundabout for two weeks because of ongoing road works.
The closure will come into effect at 8am on Saturday, February 17, and the road will reopen at 6am on Monday, March 5.
During that time there will be no access to Pontygwindy Road from Pwllypant roundabout, and Pontygwindy Road will be closed northbound at the junction with the access road leading to Catnic.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has said the closure will allow remaining construction work to be carried out to the Pontygwindy Road arm of the £5 million roundabout improvement scheme – including kerbing, drainage, road widening and the construction of a new footpath.
Deputy leader of the council Cllr Sean Morgan said: “We fully recognise these works are likely to be disruptive, and we appreciate the patience of our residents, business owners and motorists while these essential works are carried out.
“The timing has been selected to coincide with half-term, which we hope will minimise the disruption this temporary closure may cause, and every attempt will be made to complete these works in a shorter time period than the anticipated two weeks”.
The council said the closure was considered the least disruptive over a short period of time than other alternatives.
During the closure period, diversionary routes will be clearly signposted and pedestrian access will be via the Pontygwindy Industrial Estate and the overbridge to Llanbradach. If disabled access is required during the closure, residents are asked to contact a member of the site team on 07977 197125 to arrange escorted access.
Cllr Morgan added: “Once completed, the programme of improvement works at Pwllypant roundabout will see the creation of a more efficient highway, which helps to reduce congestion, improve safety and improve the reliability of local bus services”.
The council will suffer extreme embarrassment ( not to mention criticism ) if this scheme when completed, doesn’t deliver the promised improvements
So let me get this right, people complain that the roundabout needs improvements so eventually the council do something about it and add extra lanes which logically will improve traffic flow and deliver improvements but that wont be enough for some people.
With 4 or 5 new housing estates already planned for the area these works will be totally inadequate .
