School pupils from Caerphilly County Borough were set the task of creating solar-powered model Lego cars as part of an event to promote science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

The event was organised by Careers Wales, BITC Cymru, Nissan and the Eden Education Centre.

It saw pupils between the ages of 12 and 13 paired up with car company Nissan to build cars of their own that could run on renewable solar energy.

Pupils had the chance to examine Nissan’s electric Leaf car to help inspire their work.

The winning team was from Blackwood Comprehensive School which scored the most points for their aerodynamic, solar-powered Lego car.

Graham Bowd, Chief Executive at Careers Wales, said: “By bringing this cluster of schools together, our aim was to provide pupils with the opportunity to learn more about the growing importance of energy efficiency in business and innovation.

“This event gave students the opportunity to engage with a major car company and take part in STEM challenges, drawing their attention to the role of renewable energy in business innovation.”
