Two defibrillators have been installed at the Twyn Community Centre in Caerphilly town, ensuring there is round-the-clock help in the event of a heart attack.

The idea to install the life-saving machines, both inside and outside of the busy community centre, came from street pastor Amanda Thomas.

Plaid Cymru councillor James Fussell, who represents the St Martin’s ward and chairs the community centre’s committee, said: “Up until now Caerphilly Town has had around 16 defibs within a 500 metre radius but none were accessible outside of normal office hours.

“Every week up to 1,000 people use the Twyn and it is open most days and evenings, sometimes until 10.30pm,while the street pastors operate out of the centre on Saturday evening and early Sunday morning.”

He added: “Caretakers at the centre have had training and can also train others up.

The defibrillators cost a total of £1,600 and were bought with help from Caerphilly County Borough Council’s health and safety staff.
