Caerphilly Town councillors have installed the Silent Soldier on the tower of the Twyn Community Centre as part of the British Legion campaign marking 100 years’ since the end of World War One.

The Silent Soldier represents those who lost their lives and those whose lives would never be the same again.

Town Mayor Simon Morgan said: “We are proud to be a part of the Legion’s `Lest we Forget` campaign. I feel that when people see this they will pause, for no matter how briefly, and think about those who sacrificed so much.”

Plaid Cymru Councillor James Fussell, who installed the Silent Soldier, said: “The words ‘Dros Ryddid Collasant eu Gwaed …For Freedom They Lost their Blood’ were written by Evan James who was born just a 100 metres away in a cottage where the Caerphilly Workmen’s Hall now stands.

“Those words are part of our national anthem and make us remember that people have died, and are still dying, in so many wars.”

We must ensure that people of all generations never forget the sacrifice made in conflicts past and present.
“They gave their tomorrows for our todays……”
