Sirhowy Riverbridge in Blackwood to remain closed for repairs

News | | Published: 13:00, Thursday May 24th, 2018.

The Sirhowy Riverbridge in Blackwood is to remain closed for the foreseeable future for repair works to be carried out.

The B4254 route between the B4251 Blackwood Road and the A4048 Sirhowy Enterprise Way has been closed since April while stress investigations were carried out on the bridge.

In a statement, Caerphilly County Borough Council said a solution to reopen the bridge had been found.

It said: “The Sirhowy Riverbridge currently remains open for pedestrian access, and works to commence improvements at the retail park junction are planned to commence this week which will improve safety for road users.

“Upon completion of these accommodation works, the site compound will be established and works to the bridge itself are planned to commence in early June. At this point access to pedestrians will be removed while works progress.”

It added: “We’ll continue to work with all partners involved, and will provide further updates on works and timescales as soon as we receive the information.

“We apologise for any inconvenience these essential works are causing and appreciate our residents’ patience.”

The bridge, along with the Chartist Bridge to the north of Blackwood, is part of the Sirhowy Enterprise Way scheme, which was opened in 2005 improving access to Oakdale Business Park.

The £35 million project was paid for through a 30-year Private Finance Initiative deal. As such, the responsibility for the road lies with a private company called Sirhowy Enterprise Way Ltd, a subsidiary of the John Laing group.
