One person is still in a critical condition following a house explosion in Llanbradach, police have said.

Five people were taken to hospital after the fire in Dan-y-Darren on Monday, June 11. One has since been discharged, while three are in hospital receiving treatment on non-life threatening injuries. One remains in a stable but critical condition.

Gwent Police said the cause of the explosion was “items combusting” in the house, but did not have any further information.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “Following enquiries, we can now confirm the incident was believed to have been caused by items within the property combusting.

“As a result, there has been significant damage caused to the premises and a cordon is still in place as a safety precaution.

“Five people were taken to hospital, one has since been discharged, three are in hospital receiving treatment on non-life threatening injuries and one remains in a stable condition but critical condition.

“At this time, no other people are being sought in connection with this incident and enquires are ongoing.

“We appreciate the help and support of the community in Llanbradach and ask anyone with information to please call 101 quoting log number 360 11/06/18 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 111555.”

Emergency services were called to Dan-y-Darren, The Rise, at around 5.30pm. Eyewitnesses reported hearing “two to three” bangs and one neighbour saw the house’s front door being blown off.

Around half a dozen ambulances were in attendance as well as police, four fire engines, an aerial ladder and a water bowser.

Residents rushed out with water and first aid moments after the explosion.

Members of the close-knit community have rallied around and have already launched an appeal to help the family affected by the explosion.

So far, more than £500 has been raised through a JustGiving page set up by resident David Prince.
