Detectives investigating a house explosion are still at a loss to explain its cause.

Five people were taken to hospital after the blaze in Dan-y-Darren, Llanbradach, on Monday, June 11.

One remains in a stable, but critical, condition. Three are still in hospital receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries, while one has been discharged.

Police have ruled out a gas explosion and the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said the force was continuing its investigation. He said: “Detectives have ruled out a gas explosion, and are in the process of considering a number of other possible causes, in the hope of reaching a conclusion as soon as possible.

“Three people remain in hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

“At this time, the incident is not being treated as suspicious, and no other people are being sought in connection with the fire.

“We appreciate the help and support of the community in Llanbradach and ask anyone with information to please call 101 quoting log number 360 11/06/18 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 111 555.”

On the day of the explosion, emergency services were called to The Rise in Llanbradach at around 5.30pm.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing “two to three” bangs and one neighbour saw the front door of the house blown out.

Around half a dozen ambulances were in attendance as well as police, four fire engines, an aerial ladder and a water bowser.

Residents rushed out with water and first aid moments after the explosion.

One person in the house was flown to hospital in Birmingham, while three people were taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea and one to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

Members of the close-knit community have rallied around and have already launched an appeal to help the family affected by the explosion.

So far, almost £1,000 has been raised through a JustGiving page set up by resident David Prince.

Mr Prince posted: “May I say that the initial target of £200 has been blown away by the kind generosity of those who have donated to the fund.

“May I also thank all those who have offered to donate furniture, clothes etc and those who have offered their help and support in other ways. It is amazing how you have all pulled together as a community. Thank you.”
