Crowds turn out for Armed Forces Day celebration

The event in Bargoed saw residents, business owners, invited guests and school pupils turn out to show their support.

Crowds descended on Bargoed on Saturday, 23 June to celebrate Caerphilly County Borough Council’s annual Armed Forces Day event.

The event saw residents, business owners, invited guests and school pupils turn out to show their support.

The formal ceremony bagan with a parade led by the Royal British Legion and local cadet forces, followed by readings from the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council Cllr. Michael Adams, Lord Lieutenant of Gwent Brigadier Robert Aitken CBE, Pupils from Heolddu Comprehensive School and Royal British Legion representative Michel Waythe.

Following the ceremony, Gareth Pennell of the South Wales Armed Forces Day Committee presented the Leader of the Council Cllr. Dave Poole with a painting to thank the council for hosting the event for the past two years.

The Mayor, Cllr. Michael Adams said: “Over the past few years we have toured the county with this special event to ensure that communities across the borough have an opportunity to show their support for those who make up the Armed Forces. It was fantastic to celebrate the 2018 event in Bargoed and a pleasure to see so many residents attending to support the event.”
