Thousands of people visited the village of Machen on Saturday, 7 July, as Mill Farm hosted the village’s 77th annual agricultural show.

There was a wide array of animals, crafts and foods on display as well as a host of exhibitions from local organisations and charities.

There had been concerns that numbers may have been down on last year due to the extreme heat and a clash with football world cup matches, but fears were allayed during a busy morning on the site.

Kevin Stanworth, chairman of the Machen Agricultural Show, said: “It’s been another another successful year and the weather has really been on our side.

“We have been hugely pleased with the amount of stalls, and members of the public turned up in their droves.

“We had a very good gate this year. The same as other years, members of the public plan well ahead for the show and arrange their holidays around us. This year we had visitors from Cornwall, Scotland and France.”

The event was supported by Machen Rugby Club, who ran a bar as well as mini and touch rugby.

Caerphilly Observer was also a sponsor.
There was also a tractor pull, that saw participants attempt to pull two tractors in competition with each other.

Amanda McConnell, councillor for the Machen ward, said: “Machen Show is a friendly event and appeals to everyone with a mix of animal exhibitions, homecraft, horticulture, vintage cars, farm machinery, entertainment and competitions.

“It has been great to see that lots of people in the community of Machen get involved in the whole show and long may it continue.”
