The Tommy Cooper Society has presented Penallta Runners with a defibrillator as part of its ‘Tommy’s Ticker campaign’.

On behalf of the society, Margaret Jones handed over the machine at a recent Park Run organised by the club.

The campaign was launched in April 2013 to boost the number of emergency heart defibrillators in the Caerphilly area.

Each defibrillator costs around £1,000, and the society has teamed up with charity Welsh Hearts to donate equipment to venues across the county, including Caerphilly Library, Bedwas Workmen’s Hall and Caerphilly Castle.

Caerphilly-born magician Tommy Cooper died on stage at the age of 63, in front of millions of television viewers during Live From Her Majesty’s on April 15 1984.

Anouska Beaumont, Event Director of Penallta Park Run said: “This is amazing. The portable defibrillator enables us to have a qualified marshall on the course with a bike so that they can get to any incidents much quicker than is possible at the moment.”
