News | | Published: 16:18, Monday August 13th, 2018.

Members of the Basement LGBTQ+ group celebrate the two year anniversary with local and county councillors.

An LGBTQ+ group in Blackwood has recently celebrated its second anniversary.

The Basement LGBTQ+ group, an initiative within Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Youth Service, celebrated the anniversary on Saturday, July 28.

The group are located within Blackwood Basement, an information drop-in centre located underneath Blackwood Library.

The full-time project provides access to support, information and advocacy for those across the Caerphilly County Borough and surrounding areas who are LGBTQ+.

Over 50 young people are registered with the group, and are provided with a safe and confidential environment to express themselves and engage with other young LGBTQ+ people.

Cllr Carl Cuss, Cabinet member for Social Care and Wellbeing, said, “This was an important event that demonstrates social groups like the LGBTQ+ are crucial to providing advice and support to young people in the county borough.

“It was great to celebrate the groups’ achievements and see young people sharing their experiences and upcoming challenges.”
