A 12-year-old girl from Aberbargoed has shaved her head to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of her step-grandmother.
Cerys Owen shaved her hair off at a recent fundraising event and raised more than £400 for the charity – well in excess of her original fundraising target of £150.
The teenager said: “I never thought I’d raise as much money as I have for the charity. I couldn’t believe it when I hit my target of £150 in the first day.
“The amount of times people have asked me why I’m doing this is unbelievable but my answer is always the same. The person who was like a grandmother to me had cancer, and it’s a good cause. It’s only hair it’ll grow back.”
Richard Pugh, Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, said: “What a fantastic effort. A huge thanks from everyone at Macmillan Wales to Cerys. At just 12 years of age, Cerys is already providing an inspiring example by going out of her way to support people in her community affected by cancer.
“Last year we were able to invest over £10.3 million into improving services and putting specially trained professionals on the frontline of cancer care in Wales. Every Macmillan professional, every cancer care service we put in place, relies completely on the continued support of fundraisers like Cerys in communities across Wales.”
