Two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries after a fight broke out at a football cup final.

The fight happened during the Newport and District Football League Junior Cup held on May 1, 2018, at the Ty-Isaf Recreation Ground in Risca.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “During the second half of the match at approximately 7pm, it is believed disorder broke out involving players and supporters, where two people received serious injuries resulting in hospital treatment.

The final, contested between Machen AFC and Recrite Scaffolding FC of Newport, was won by Machen 1-0 and was the second year in a row the club had won the cup.

Congratulations to @Kaneexx and @AfcMachen on the Junior Cup victory. 88 minutes of decent football by both sides with a 2 minutes of madness in between. Officiated well, both sides giving everything they had but Machen the stronger and deserved winners!

Anyone who was at the match and witnessed the incident can call Gwent Police on 101 quoting log number 87 02/05/18 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800111555.

When asked by Caerphilly Observer why police had only just issued a public appeal when the incident took place in May, a Gwent Police spokeswoman explained: “Public appeals are sometimes not issued in the first instance due to operational and investigative reasons.”
