A garden shed designed and constructed by hand in Blackwood has been shortlisted for a UK wide award
The shed, built and designed by David Morris, is the only Welsh finalist in Readersheds’ Shed of the Year award.
Over 3,000 entries across the UK have been whittled down to 24 finalists across eight categories, with Mr Morris’ shed entered in the pub and entertainment category.
One winner from eight different categories will go through to the overall final following an online vote.
Mr Morris, a 41 year old electrician, began designing and constructing his shed in 2015, finishing earlier this summer.
Called Noah’s, because his neighbours always asked if he was building an arc with the the timber on his drive, the shed is complete with double opening doors, a television, bar, dining table and seating.
Mr Morris, who works for Diamond Facilities, told Caerphilly Observer: “I just wanted somewhere to stay dry and have a beer with friends at the beginning. We love entertaining our neighbours, we are always having barbecues and every New Years Eve we have a party.
“We used to have a smaller shed and gazebo, but I wanted something bigger. I drew some plans on a piece of paper, and somebody at an exhibition told me I would never be able to build it. I saw that as a challenge, and I would love to be able to show that guy Noah’s now.
“Everything you see has been built by myself and my neighbours, from the doors to the table and bar. It’s decorated with things we as a family have have picked up while on holiday.
“When you first start out building something like this, you don’t go into it to be shortlisted for awards, but it is good to be recognised for the hard work.”
Noah’s has cost Mr Morris around £4,000 to construct, a figure he says is much lower than what a similar shed would cost at market value.
The Shed of the Year competition is in its eleventh year, and public voting is open until 9.00am on Tuesday, August 28.
