Mrs Jones had devoted a lot of her time to a variety of charities over the last 20 years

Tributes have been paid to a great-grandmother who was hit by a car in a supermarket car park.

Mary Jones, 76, from Quakers Yard, was hit by a car at the Co-operative store on Mafon Road in Nelson at around 4pm on Friday, August 17.

Mrs Jones was taken to hospital at the time with serious injuries, but has sadly since passed away.

In a tribute her family said the retired college lecturer had devoted a lot of her time to a variety of charities over the last 20 years and was recognised for this with an invite to a 2013 Buckingham Palace garden party.

They said: “She was a devoted wife for 57 years before her husband sadly died earlier this year.

“She was immensely proud of her two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mary was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.”

Police are asking anyone who has any information about the collision to call 101.
