Enzo Calzaghe, the father and trainer of former world boxing champion Joe Calzaghe is seriously ill in hospital.

His family were forced to issue a statement on social media confirming he was in hospital after national media incorrectly reported he had passed away.

Posting on Facebook in Friday, Mr Calzaghe’s niece Carrie wrote: “Enzo Calzaghe my uncle, has not passed away, this is false news, he is alive but very poorly.

“Please allow space for our family at this time. He is alive and still fighting.

“We will keep you posted and let you know how he is doing when we can. Please allow and respect our privacy at this time Thank you. Team Calzaghe.”

At his Newbridge-based gym, Enzo guided his son to become an undefeated two-weight world champion in a 46-fight professional career.
