Asda promises no 24-hour opening at Caerphilly town store despite application

Supermarket Asda has said it will not be opening its Caerphilly store 24 hours a day – despite submitting an alcohol licence application for such a thing.

Residents and councillors had voiced concerns at the prospect of the store, on Pontygwindy Road, opening all hours, but a spokesman for the firm clarified its position.

The spokesman said the application for a 24-hour licence would mean the store had extra flexibility around its festive opening times, for example if it wanted to open or close earlier on a given day.

Asked directly if the store had any plans for 24-hour opening at all, even around Christmas, the spokesman said no.

Labour councillors Jamie Pritchard and Shayne Cook, who represent the Morgan Jones ward, have been collecting the views of residents about the application.

Cllr Pritchard said: “The Asda store is a well-used major employer in the ward, but there needs to be a balance between accessing the store and any unwanted consequences that could come with increased hours.

“For instance, we will be seeking increased security during any extended hours.”

Discussing possible 24-hour opening by the store, one Facebook user posted: “To all those thinking this is a ‘great idea’, you obviously don’t live as close to the shop as we do.

“I am utterly opposed to the whole idea. As well as the ‘after hours’ traffic it will attract, it will encourage those seeking booze after hours to head on over.

“It will become even more of a magnet for those who gather, intent on antisocial behaviour.”
