Efforts are being made by a dedicated group of volunteers to get Caerphilly town on the sporting map – with a soapbox race.
As part of the competition, teams design and build their own go-karts and race them down a hill with a variety of obstacles.
A Facebook group driving the campaign to bring such an event to Caerphilly is gaining momentum, and meetings have already been had with the council.
One of the people behind the idea is Shaun Dodd, a 45-year-old IT manager.
Mr Dodd explained: “It all came from an idea posted on another Facebook group and the response was great.
“A few of us then got together and thought ‘can we really make this happen?’ and we put some feelers out.
“Portishead, near Bristol, and Penarth have such races and we’ve had a few pointers and this could be a goer.”
The organisers have already met with Caerphilly County Borough Council and things are looking promising.
The planned route would be from the top of Cardiff Road, near Wetherspoons, down to the Tommy Cooper statue near Barclays Bank.
A Caerphilly County Borough Council spokeswoman said: “The organisers recently met the council’s Events Safety Advisory Group with initial outline proposals for their event, which certainly sounds like an exciting proposal.
“As with any proposed public event, there are a number of key considerations the organisers will need to give thought to in order to bring their idea to fruition, and the group have offered to support the organisers in exploring these considerations over the coming months”.
