Pupils at a primary school have been praised for their efforts to reduce single-use plastics.

Waunfawr Primary School, Crosskeys, is the first school in Wales to receive a prestigious “Green Apple Award” for “Environmental Best Practice” following the success of their “Back to the Future in Glass Bottles” campaign.

The school, which has received a handwritten letter of support from Sir David Attenborough, will be presented with the Green Organisation award at the Houses of Parliament in November.

The school successfully campaigned and lobbied the council to end their deliveries of milk in plastic containers and instead opted for the more traditional glass bottle.

The number of plastic third-of-a-pint milk bottles being delivered to the school daily amounted to nearly 13,000 bottles a year.

Cllr Philippa Marsden, Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement said: “Staff and children at the school have shown great commitment to reducing plastic waste and are leading the way with their glass milk bottle scheme.”
