Plans for Caerphilly County Borough’s first crematorium unveiled

Plans have been unveiled for Caerphilly County Borough’s first crematorium.

The crematorium, planned for Pontllanfraith, would be ‘the most state-of-the-art’ in Europe, according to developers Westerleigh, and would host up to 1,300 funerals a year – averaging five a day. Currently, the nearest crematoriums are Cwmbran, Newport and Thornhill.

Ed Aldridge, Senior Development Manager for the Westerleigh Group, said: “The new crematorium and memorial park will offer a pleasant setting with beautiful landscaped grounds, providing the space and time for a dignified and respectful service.”

The crematorium, which will be accessed via Sirhowy Enterprise Way, will be housed in a modestly-sized single-storey building with a 98-seat chapel, a waiting room, toilets, and administrative offices. There will also be 84 public parking spaces.

A planning application is yet to be submitted with the council. An Air Quality Assessment Report will have to be included, although Westerleigh said the crematorium would have no smoke or odours because of advanced filtration equipment.

A public consultation on the plans was held on Tuesday, December 4, at Pontllanfraith Workmen’s Club
