Risca Primary School has been praised in a report from education watchdog Estyn.

The report highlighted the quality of teaching and assessment across the school.

Inspectors were also impressed with how pupils are able to have a say in what and how they learn.

The report says: “The experienced headteacher provides strong, effective and purposeful leadership.

“She has very high expectations of pupils and staff and has a clear vision for the development of the school, which she shares purposefully with all pupils, staff and governors. Risca Primary staff are forward thinking and share their findings and successes openly with other schools across the region.”

Headteacher Jayne Arthur said: “The staff and governors are pleased with the report which recognises the children’s values and enthusiastic attitudes to learning. They would like to publicly acknowledge the dedication of staff, parents, governors and other partners. The school is extremely grateful to all our volunteers and partners for enriching the lives of our pupils and, in doing so, strengthening our community.”

The report offered only two recommendations – improve attendance and ensure that targets for pupils with additional learning needs are specific and measurable.
