A woman from Caerphilly will be running in the London Marathon on April 28 to raise money for a dementia charity.
Rhian Rees, 31, will be taking part in the 26 mile race to support the Dementia Revolution – a one-year campaign from Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Rhian said: “I have always wanted to run The London Marathon, but to be able to do it while raising money for such an important cause means so much to me.
“My granddad lived with dementia and so as a family we have seen how devastating a disease it is for everyone affected. We are passionate about helping raise money for the charities in the hope that one day they will find a cure.”
To prepare for the marathon, Rhian has been running three times a week.
“I’m doing a lot of running, which is tough but I’m enjoying it.
“I’m nervous for the marathon but I can’t wait. I’ve spoken to people who have run it before and they’ve all said the event and the atmosphere in London is incredible.”
Rhian added: “I did a marathon five years ago but injured my knee in training. I’m feeling a lot better this time.”
On Friday, April 11, Rhian raised £700 from a quiz night and raffle she organised at Cilfynydd rugby club.
Nina Ziaullah, Dementia Revolution Campaign Manager, said: “Dementia is the biggest health threat facing society and there are currently no effective treatments to slow, prevent or cure it.
“Today, almost a million people are living with dementia in the UK.”
She added: “But dementia is not a lost cause. With the help of our amazing runners we can and will end it with research.
“On marathon day we will have the largest ever team of runners raising funds for dementia research. We can’t thank them enough for making a stand with us and joining the charge toward a cure.”
Rhian has already exceeded her target of raising £1,000.
She told Caerphilly Observer: “When I first started, my target was £250 but people have been incredibly generous so I’m aiming higher.
“Everyone I speak to says they’ve known someone who’s been affected by dementia.”
