A memorial concert will be held at Bedwas Workmen’s Hall on Saturday, April 27, to raise funds for a memorial dedicated to Sergeant Major Michael Williams.
Sgt Maj Williams, from Bedwas, was killed in a firefight with the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2008.
The new community garden is to be created out of derelict land attached to the Bedwas Trethomas Machen Community Council offices.
In November last year, volunteers from Bedwas and Trethomas Allotment Association and the 7th Caerphilly Scouts joined Bedwas Trethomas and Machen community councillors and volunteers from retailer Wilko and charity Keep Wales Tidy for a litter pick on the land.
The volunteers spent two hours clearing the area opposite Bedwas High School and collected 46 bags of rubbish.
The community garden will be named in honour of the fallen soldier, who was part of the Second Batallion The Parachute Regiment.
The event will hope to raise money for a memorial entrance into the garden, with £5,000 needed to fund the project.
The concert will start at 7pm and will feature a number of local performers, including the Military Wives Choir.
Other performers include Mad Tom’s Crowd, soloist Wayne George who will be performing West End classics, guitarist Owen Morgan who will sing a variety of Ed Sheeran hits and Ystrad-Mynach based rock band Moosehead.
A raffle will also be held at the concert, with prizes ranging from a holiday in the Peak District, bottles of whiskey, or a trip to the hairdressers.
Tickets for the concert cost £10 and are available online from www.ticketsource.co.uk/bwh.
Alternatively, tickets can be bought from Machen Post Office, Bedazzled Hairdressers in Trethomas, Cards for all Occasions in Bedwas and the Pit Stop Cafe in Bedwas.
