MasterChef contestant to open ‘pop-up’ restaurant for one night only at Caerphilly Castle

MasterChef’s Stephen Ford has launched a new venture with two of the show’s co-contestants

An amateur chef from Caerphilly who appeared on BBC TV’s MasterChef is to open a ‘pop-up’ restaurant at Caerphilly Castle next month.

Stephen Ford, 50, reached the last 12 of the competition earlier this year, but was eventually voted off by judges. Together with fellow contestants Alex Talbot, 43, from Hindon, Wiltshire, who came sixth, and Thomas Elson-Knight, 25, from Plymouth, Devon, who reached the final five, Stephen has launched SALT Kitchen.

Stephen said: “SALT Kitchen really is the culmination of all of our cookery skills and the experience we learnt from our time on MasterChef. Moving from cooking for a few in our homes to mass catering or fine dining for over 80 people was thrilling and it felt right to take that concept and host events for people to experience it first hand rather than via their screens.

“The food we want to cook is top restaurant quality and uses all the wonderful, rich local ingredients the south coast has to offer. We can’t wait to get going and cook for you.”

SALT Kitchen will be held at Caerphilly Castle on Thursday, June 13. Just 100 tickets, costing £75 each, are available for the four-course dinner, drinks pairing with each course, and a welcome cocktail.

Guests will be able to enjoy dishes such as risotto nero, filet of hake with a dill emulsion, pan-seared duck breast with a panko hen yolk, dressed in orange and a duck Vincotto sauce, and for dessert, a cocoa bean bombe filled with a decadent chocolate mousse and a raspberry core.

An event in Bath is also due to be held at the end of this month.
