More than 120 presents have been donated to a Christmas box appeal set up to give gifts to homeless people this festive season.

Donations were delivered to various drop-off stations in Risca and Crosskeys, with a total of 121 presents donated.

Gem Walker, who organised the initiative, said she was inspired to set up the appeal after a conversation with her eight-year-old daughter, who pointed out that not everyone is lucky enough to receive presents at Christmas.

Ms Walker said: “Without hesitation I was straight on the computer setting up this appeal, it started off just a small thing asking a few people for a few shoe boxes then to what it is now – several shops and businesses helping, people donating to our JustGiving page and people donating to our donation boxes.”

The appeal also raised £165, which was put towards buying hats, scarves, gloves, sleeping bags, gift paper and a tent.

Twenty boxes have already been given to Cornerstone Support’s pop-up night shelter, while Some of the boxes will be kept for the Caerphilly Churches Night Shelter scheme, which is set to return in January.
