Trees planted during family fun day

A Family fun day was held at Cefn Fforest Eco Park on Tuesday, February 18.

Children were invited to St Thomas’s Church hall to craft pinecone bird feeders, and pinecone bee and bird boxes, among other things. Some of the bird boxes were then attached to trees in the Eco Park.

The day’s activities included a treasure hunt, litter-picking, marshmallow toasting and the planting of a dozen fruit trees at the Eco Park.

Around 45 people attended the event, which was hosted by WeCare in conjunction with Friends of the EcoPark to celebrate the work of volunteers and Green Team members since October 2019.

WeCare is funded through Welsh Government’s Enabling Natural Resources and Well-being grant.

The programme aims to promote local environmental improvements to transform green public spaces into new green community assets for the community.

Co-ordinator for the WeCare programme with Groundwork Wales, Faye Williams, said: “The event saw families taking part in treasure hunt activities to re-introduce them to the trails around the park and follow newly established paths and trails to the newly restored pond.

“Litter pick competitions and nature crafts were enjoyed by all, as well as having a campfire which provided a focal point for community members to chat, connect and toast marshmallows.”

Chris Edwards, secretary of the Friends of the EcoPark group, said: “The Day was a success despite the weather. A big thank you must go to the team from Groundwork for their help.

“There are more events planned for the next few months.”
